AMHEC has been the lead association in setting up a number of projects and initiatives for the sector. What follows are details of our current projects.
Benchmarking
The HEFCE funded AMHEC Benchmarking Project aims to provide benchmarking tools and information for higher education institutions to improve processes and efficiency. The project was initiated by AMHEC in 2000 whereby a number of our institutions developed an online benchmarking database to compare processes and operational costs. This practice is still continuing and is achieved by exchanging financial data on an annual basis and through a series of annual workshops which bring practitioners together to look at ways of improving processes and performance. Full details of the project and its future plans to expand the number of HEIs engaged with the project are available at: www.benchmarkinginhe.co.uk
Shared Legal Service
Following a highly successful HEFCE funded feasibility study which was carried out in partnership with JISC Legal and Guild HE, AMHEC obtained HEFCE support and funding to develop via a subsidiary of JISC Legal a three year Pilot Study to provide a shared legal service provision for AMHEC member HEIs in the first instance and subsequently the wider HEI sector. The development of this service is in its final stages of implementation and should be available from July – August 2011.The service, which will have a separate identity to JISC Legal will provide initial 'in-house” advice on a wide range of legal matter and produces briefing notes, guidance documents and up to date news on legal developments affecting the sector. The shared legal service will also manages a Legal Panel which enables significant cost savings to be made relating to legal fees.

In addition practical initiatives will be undertaken which lead to reductions in carbon emissions. Further information will be made available as the study progresses
